Methods
The IDV desk started from a standard computer desk, and uses four workstation tower water cooled computers. Each computer is based on multi-core processors with 2-8 GB of RAM, controls a column of two displays, and is interconnected by a Gigabit Ethernet switch. Three PCs are used for parallel simulation and parallel visualization and one PC is used as a database server with over 1 TB of storage.
The software components running in the IDV desk are off-the-shelf software distributed under open-source licenses. The IDV desk is controlled with a single keyboard and a single mouse by using the software Synergy. Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of the screen. Synergy allows cut-and-paste of the clipboard between workstations.
