SOFT
Simulation, Optimisation, Fabrication and Testing
Introduction
SOFT aims at achieving the optimum design of a small (approx. 5") VAWT known as "The Savonius Rotor".Motivation: The Savonius Rotor is interesting because it can
- start with very low speed wind.
- work in highly variable wind conditions inherent to turbulence in urban environment.
- resist hurricanes, if properly embedded into a stator.
Objectives:
- Optimize the blade shape of the Savonius rotor to get the maximum rotation speed.
- Demonstrate that the SOFT loop concept can be applied to multiple optimum design problems.
- Fluid structure interactions simulations (FSIS) are highly compute intensive.
- The optimization algorithm performs a huge number of simulations.
