Introduction

SOFT aims at achieving the optimum design of a small (approx. 5") VAWT known as "The Savonius Rotor".

Motivation: The Savonius Rotor is interesting because it can
  • start with very low speed wind.
  • work in highly variable wind conditions inherent to turbulence in urban environment.
  • resist hurricanes, if properly embedded into a stator.
It can have multiple uses mainly in the production of alternative and clean electricity.

Objectives:
  • Optimize the blade shape of the Savonius rotor to get the maximum rotation speed.
  • Demonstrate that the SOFT loop concept can be applied to multiple optimum design problems.
Challenge: Approach: Using a distributed computing environment combined with adequate implementation, we can win these challenges.
